Suggestions for outreach events
Angela is experienced in working with very young children and teaches the cello to four year olds so she can work with any age group. It is beneficial for the primary cello teacher whose pupils will be taking part to have a discussion with Angela in advance, to avoid any possible instructions that might conflict with the teacher.
Angela's specialist areas might include Alexander Technique work combined with instrumental playing. A masterclass of this kind can be a revelation and completely transform more aspects of the student's life than just the playing! The result depends largely on the student's enthusiasm and ability to respond to the work but basics such as these are essential to improve playing. The student only need bring a very short excerpt from a work to take part. Angela will listen to the student play and then make suggestions for subtle changes that can make the world of difference. This can be done privately if the student would prefer.
Angela has a collection of historical instruments that can be demonstrated with musical examples - see 'A Tale of Five Cellos' under Performance/Suggested recital programmes. This programme is more suited to a slightly older audience. Angela has been in the business of historical performance practice and continuo playing for most of her life.
Angela can give a workshop based on her book 'Play Baroque' to show how she uses it in her teaching.
When inviting a complete ensemble for an outreach event, such as Red Priest, to get the best value it is a good idea to delegate different activities to each member of the group. There have been a number of occasions when we have been asked to take a masterclass and all four members have much to say, so the poor student receives a huge amount of different and occasionally conflicting information. In our group we have two string players, Piers on recorders and David as the keyboardist, so do invite us to work with our specialisms!
For suggestions from the other members of the group, please enquire through the Red Priest website: www.redpriest.com
