Baroque Course
This course will take place over eight Saturday evenings and will join forces with the teacher training course as part of Level 3, because much of the repertoire for this level comes from the baroque period. It is not necessary to take the teacher training course to apply for the baroque course but you do need a proficient technique. The baroque course will be about stylistic matters and although there is always a crossover, it is not intended for technical training. Nor do you need a baroque instrument or bow (although please use these if you have them!). This course is for players of traditional instruments.
The course will cover:
The changes that take place naturally as a consequence of different holds of instrument and bow
The changes that take place naturally as a consequence of the old design of instrument and bow; how to adapt these to your instrument and bow
The properties of gut versus metal strings
The expressive qualities of the left hand
Shaping of notes and phrases
Dance versus song
Continuo playing
Chamber Music
Editing
History of the instrument and bow
Stylistic features of the repertoire in 'Play Baroque!' by Angela East publ. Stainer & Bell
Stylistic features of the following repertoire:
Marcello Sonata in E minor
Bréval Sonata in C major
Bach Suite no. 1 in G major
Vivaldi Sonata in E minor
Bach Arioso from Cantata 156
